How do I chg my catalytic converter on my 88 chevy pu?

My truck smells a little, and I think the catalytic converter is going or has gone out. Can I change it on my own?

If anyone can leave me some detailed instructions on how I can do this, it would be much appreciated.

If no one can leave me detailed instructions to do it, because it is something that must be mechanic shop serviced, please let me know.

It would mean alot to me and 10 points to the considerate one to leave me correct instructions.

I appreciate detailed instructions, as I always strive to leave detailed instructions in my answers to peoples request for instructions on yahoo.

Thank you so much. How do I chg my catalytic converter on my 88 chevy pu?when a convertor goes bad it is usaully just because it is clogged up. it is good to replace it but you can take it off clean it and put it back on. your dont have to weld it but a lot of people do. you can use exauhst clamps if the ends are tappered enough. but welding is the most durable way to hold it back up. being that the metal is so thin your gonna want some one with a lot of welding experience to do it for youHow do I chg my catalytic converter on my 88 chevy pu?unless you have a welder or can weld i dont think you can do it you have to cut it off then weld it on

  • My car didnt pass the inspection, it overall passed everything except the NOx(ppm)...?

I changed the catalytic converter, exhausts, and i think it could be a sensor or something. Its for a 95 camaro v6 3.4L. How can i find out where the source of it is coming from to make the engine light stop going on? If its a sensor, how can i find where its located and how much do they sell them for at the parts store? Thanks. My car didnt pass the inspection, it overall passed everything except the NOx(ppm)...?You need to go and speak to the chap who did your test. He is the automotive engineer. Hell will, I'm sure, be more than happy to put you in the right direction.

It is hard to say from your description. The problem could be anywhere, really. I suspect one, or even two oxygen sensors that tell the ECU when to meter the fuel and how much. Also the' mass airflow' sensor could be dirty, and thus giving a more than correct reading to the computer.

I would also run the vehicle on a tank full of premium gas, and add a can of B12 to the tank, too. This will clean the injectors, and get rid of any deposits in the cylinder head.

Before you do anything, you might take off the EGR valve and clean off any carbon deposits. The tube that feeds the EGR valve from the exhaust will need to be cleaned out thoroughly, too. I would do this first, before paying out any cash for sensors.

    Best of luck

Dr AntonyMy car didnt pass the inspection, it overall passed everything except the NOx(ppm)...?you need a pro to get after it/you are throwing parts at it and it aint fixed yet//thats an expensive way to do itMy car didnt pass the inspection, it overall passed everything except the NOx(ppm)...?go to autozone and have therm hook it up to their diagnistic testor to see what the code is. im guessing its the o2 sensor it is located in your exhaust coming off the manifolds. it takes a special socket to remove it cost is about 10 dollars for the socket the price ot the new o2 sensor is 50 to 75 bucks. also i would change my spark plugs b4 having it rechecked good luckMy car didnt pass the inspection, it overall passed everything except the NOx(ppm)...?you could cheat rather than fix it. run your car till the tank is almost empty. put in 10 gallons of premium gas (no ethanol) and two bottles of rubbing alcohol bounce the trunk enough to mix. drive enough to clear fuel line of unmixed gas and go have it tested right then. it should pass. (mixture will burn hotter and cleaner though not real good for engine it won't hurt it. )

How can I reset the Check Engine light on a BMW E30 1988 325?

A year ago, I changed the catalytic converter after a smog test failure. After, it passed with flying colors. Check engine light flashes in a sequence of %26quot;flash, flash, on%26quot; after using the ignition key method (this means it needs an oxygen sensor). I replaced the oxygen sensor; however, the check engine light continues to give the %26quot;replace oxygen sensor code.%26quot; Is there a way to reset the CE light without going to the dealer? They sell them direct, or check online for other BMW specialist resellers who often offer them at a discount. It'll provide easier to read code reading than the %26quot;stomp test%26quot; method, and you can reset the lights, too.

However, if the car has a hard failure, the problem should turn on the Check Engine light again. There is a PEAKE R-5 Resetting tool for BMWs that plugs into the diagnostic connector. My Chevy Truck Failed the Emission Test HELP?

Hi guys I just joined this forum and this is my first post and I really need some HELP.

I have a problem and would like come suggestion on how to fix it.

I have a 1988 Chevy truck with a 4.3 motor and I swaped it out for another 4.3 motor because the other one was no good . I had to take it for a emission test but before I did I changed the oil 'oil filter replaced the plugs' rotor and cap and then took it for the test and it failed.

Here's the reading of the test.

    ASM 2525 Curb Idle

    HC ppm 83 190 FAIL 200 419 FAIL

    CO% 0.46 0.95 FAIL 1.00 1.99 FAIL

IT FAILED : So I brought it back home and I took of the EGR valve and checked the ports to make sure they where not cloged and they where clean and I cleaned the EGR valve put it back on. I checked the vacuum line on the EGR valve to make sure it was opening right after idle and checked all other vacuum lines for leaks.I dumped some good throttle body ' valve and combustion chanber cleaner down it and let it site . Then I started it and boy did it ever smoke. I changed the plug wires air filter and pcv valve and took it for another test.

Can anyone give me a suggestion on what to do next.

I checked the timing but I wasn't sure what the timing is suppose to be. I looked in my book but it did not say and I looked on my truck but nothing.

Anyhow I read in the book that the ignition timing cannot be abjusted on 1996 and later SFI engines on a 4.3L v6 engines because it is electronic controled. So what can I do to bring the HC and CO down to make it pass.

Thanks in advance for any HELP.

PS: and I changed the catalytic converter 2 years ago ' I put a universal cat on it and now someone told me that they only last one to two years ' Is that true.My Chevy Truck Failed the Emission Test HELP?LOL, (not at you),

everybody always says replace yhe O2 sensor,

well in this case they would be correct,

if you had a scan tool available you would note the high block learn and integrator numbers,

simply replace the O2 sensor and go pass your test

    your welcome in advance,

if you do as I say you will pass!!!!!

change only the O2 sensor, not the cat.,

the egr valve only works to reduce NOX emissions by lowering combustion temperature, the cat helps burn excess hydrocarbon but only to an extent, a good running fuel injected vehicle could pass a HC and CO emission test without a cat, however it would fail in the nitrogen oxide area!!My Chevy Truck Failed the Emission Test HELP?If both HC and CO are high, the vehicle may have a bad catalytic converter or an air pump problem. if you put a new catalytic converter on it prior to swapping motors, the old one probably plugged it up.

Also, you need to make sure that the truck is good and hot prior to the test. The cat is only effective when it's hot.My Chevy Truck Failed the Emission Test HELP?Is running rich, check for loose and/or dirty connectors and like mentioned, the O2 sensor can be reading wrong. By the way... is all stock? Did you changed anything like High Performance? Such as, Exhaust Headers, Performance Chip or any other toy that can throw off the sensor readings? My Chevy Truck Failed the Emission Test HELP?my trust in bustas here he has bailed me out beforeMy Chevy Truck Failed the Emission Test HELP?Did you say the timing hasn't been set?

On these it must be set.

There is a wire you disconnect, then a timing light will work.

I am not sure where it is, but I would get the timing set first.

This will cause your emission problems.

How much should I drive a 2003 Toyota Corolla to get the readiness code active again?

I had a check engine light (code p420) and my mechanic said it will cost $1200 to change the catalytic converter but usually this is casued by a defective oxygen sensor.

I learned through some research that if I disconnect the battery and connect it back, the check engine light disappears (it did). When I took the car for emissions testing diagnosis I learned that my car was not ready to throw out a report as it was not driven long enough after the battery disconnection and it should be, before the %26quot;readiness code%26quot; is reset.

My question: How much should I drive before the emissions can read from my car computer? There is no check engine light right now but if I drive too long, it might come back, so what is the range of miles/speeds that I should drive?

Readers who have especially had experience with a Toyota Corolla can add more value to this question.

Thanks guys! How much should I drive a 2003 Toyota Corolla to get the readiness code active again?Best if let car sit overnight, cold engine, with half full gas tank, start and let it warm up like 10 minutes, with AC on,then drive nice and easy local and highway speed, best when there is no or very light traffic.Whenever have to stop, leave engine idling until finish, all monitor should run within half an hour, anything no good will show up by the check engine light,or all system ready or completed. How much should I drive a 2003 Toyota Corolla to get the readiness code active again?I think you drive it for 40-50 miles before it can reset itself. How much should I drive a 2003 Toyota Corolla to get the readiness code active again?drive at speed 80 to 90 km /h for 45km

    Question for car modifiers?????

How come when people change their exhaust system to a performance one, they always go for a cat-back or a cat-back with extractors and not a full whole exhaust system including all the pipes. I see a lot of people that do not change their catalytic converter to a better performance enhancing one. Is it because they are too poor or not as good?????. I want to know.Question for car modifiers?????Usually doing the cat back system as well as the headers will give you power gains decent enough to do them. A lot of modifiers leave the catalytic converters because for one, it's an added expense with very little effect. Secondly, smog. People don't want to go through replacing the converters and fail the smog and then putting the old one back. Just a pain in the behind. Personally, I'd just leave the catalytic converters alone. Headers and the cat back system will do a good job in the power gains department. It's just the beginning of the fun world of modification.Question for car modifiers?????punch holes in your cat

    sounds great

    illegal

but greatQuestion for car modifiers?????cat back is easier, also a lot of OBD II (newer) cars require that both the pre cat o2 sensor and post -cat 02 sensor remain intact for emissions purposes. I would personally go with headers and full exhaust because usually next to the mufflers, stock headers are the most restrictive.

  • Catalytic converter warranty for a 2006 330i BMW?

    Hello,

I have a 2006 330i BMW that has 72000 miles, the 'check engine soon' light came on, after taking for a diagnostic the computer says that the catalytic converter may need to be changed.

I understand that the EPA enforces a warranty on catalytic converters, how can I look for this regulation for this vehicle and how do I make BMW to comply with it?

    Thanks,

Agustin.Catalytic converter warranty for a 2006 330i BMW?Whoever diagnosticed it is a retard. Bmw's dont bring up CHANGE CAT CODES. Take it straight to the dealership and have them diagnose it. It is probally a bad 02 sensor or something.Catalytic converter warranty for a 2006 330i BMW?The EPA requires auto manufacturers to cover all emissions related components (your catalytic converter qualifies as that) to be covered by a 10 year/ 100,000 mile warranty. If your catalytic converter is bad, then it will be covered under warranty.Catalytic converter warranty for a 2006 330i BMW?Chances are that the good people at BMW will not hastle you about this. But, you should clean out your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE and throttle body with Gum-out first, as these things actually can CAUSE a problem with a catalytic converter. Also, where you buy gas can affect this. READ your manual about emissions warranties. Hopefully, you are in compliance with the BMW maintenance schedule!!!

    Catalytic converter question?

I have a 3.5 liter engine with 24 valves and I have a bad catalytic converter. How much is the average price to change this. I have my car at a mechanics and he said 950.00. I also am replacing a PVC tube and getting my cooling system checked.Catalytic converter question?First off, don't trust your mechanic all the time.

Catalytic converters rarely go bad. Unless your car was running realy bad.

Consider getting a second opinion, and ask for the old parts back.Catalytic converter question?Shop around 950 is nuts.Catalytic converter question?Catalytic converters are very expensive, they contain presious metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium, there is no way to keep the cost down when having one replaced.......Catalytic converter question?Catalytic converters can be expensive. A cheap, universal fit cat. converter will cost at least $250 excluding labor. They usually have to weld the part into the exhaust system. With the other stuff you're having done, I'd say the price is just about right.Catalytic converter question?950 is a bit steep get your yellow pages out call some muffler shops get estimate usually when the converter stops up you lose power and in some cases over heats call around for other estimates hope this helpsCatalytic converter question?First of all if the guys who try to fix cars would shut up and do something else with their wastless lives auto repair would be so much easier. You failed to mention what type of vehicle and year but the most common 3.5 is a Mopar. Catalytic Converters can Fail for only Three Reasons. 1. Clogging due to burning oil or driving with a Misfire 2. Catalyst Loose in Shell and this could be from overheating 3. Catalyst Efficiency below Level. Now listen up all the Backyard guys who answered this previously since 1996 OBD 1 and OBD 2 Cat requirements have becomme alot tighter. That once used Universal Cat no Longer exists. A converter needs to be Certified for that specific Vehicle which also requires Location and Oxygen Sensor location to stay stock. Many Converter Companies are now only selling Direct Fit Converters which Drives the Price Up. Also they do not make alot of The OBD 2 Cats yet which only leaves the dealer to purchase from and this gets even pricier. Now put into that California starting 1/1/2009 will only allow OBD2 Cats to be installe in all vehicles driven in California, these Cats burn the Exhaust Gases far better than say a 1981 vehicle which means the cost is higher. Lets not forget the Time the Garage spent Diagnosing the failure of this cat also and the Time to replace it. Many people do sidework and will charge a very low rate they and you are however breaking the Clean Air Act Law as only a Owner or Garage can Replace a Converter on a Car. and Yes there is a time period that the Garage needs to store the Cats for DMV and the EPA. For anyone reading this we must realize that vehicles are not as simple as they were even 5 years ago and that take some expertise not just google and guess works and for someone that is trained and experienced to work on a vehicle and fix it right the first time is more valusble than what you pay the Backyard Smucks ( yes there are not mechanics in my eyes)

How much should it cost to replace my catalytic converter?

I have a 1998 Dodge Neon and my auto repair man said it would cost $303 for parts and labor. He normally gives me a good deal (he just changed the rear main seal for $350/$400 -- trying to get him at $350 when he quoted $400 haha), but it seems a little high to me.

Let me know what you think. There are 121,000 miles on the carHow much should it cost to replace my catalytic converter? Not a bad price. Prices usually depend where you live. Some places will be able to do them anywhere from $175-400 depending on labor rates and brand of parts they use. You could always call a few shops in the area and get a quote over the phone. How much should it cost to replace my catalytic converter? The Cat converter for that car is under a $100, but He will charge you almost double, then add labor to it...Don't you know of someone who could do it for $50 because it is like changing a muffler, not hard at all...but since you put this much money in this car already...I would have someone that you know do it or just get rid of that car...All the things you had done with it already, tells you that it's time to give up the car and look for something else...Try a Honda or Mazda...both offer small cars, and while alittle expensive...there is a reason for that...they are built well...but a neon? It's never been built even average....How much should it cost to replace my catalytic converter? There are two types of replacement catalytic converters. #1. The cut your pipe weld adapters and scab back together deal. They might work for a few minutes or days or not at all. They're the $100. -$150.00 specials. #2. The direct replacement type that has welded flanges all installed in the new converter front and rear which would be a direct bolt-on unit. They cost more but they're guarantied and they work.

Dealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??

My mom bought her 2004 volvo S80 from dealer w/ 14K miles on it (bought in aug 06) . We became been suspicious after she had to have catalytic converter changed so soon so did a background check on line using her VIN number. We discovered it had been sold at an auction with an odometer reading of 61K+ miles on it!! She bought it from a volvo dealership. I dont have experience in this. It looks like the mileage got rolled back which I know is illegal. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this? I want to help my mom but need suggestions on how to approach the dealer (the car is having a lot of probs and my mom, bless her heart is 77. I dont like people taking advantage/lying to Sr's. Second contact the police, fraud is a crime.

    Third, contact a lawyer.

Fourth, get you mom some lemons and set up a lemon stand outside the dealership with a sign that says %26quot;Why buy a lemon from him? I will give you one for free%26quot; Get the proper permits and give out lemons with her story attached. It is against the law to do that. Also, there is a lemon law. Ask any car dealership for help.Dealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??talk to an attorney, take all your proof to him and ask him what to do!

it's called ( THE LEMON LAW )Dealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??well go back and tell them in secrecy that you know the car has alot more miles, and demand your money back, if he denies it then go to the police. if the police laugh at you, then its time to bring out the big guns. try using mostly FN Minimi's, and 50.00 Caliber rifles, and some granade launchers. and go after that mofo, and take all his otehr cars. thatll teach him. fight fire with fire i always say.Dealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??you dont have to get a lawyer go to the DMV. the dealer committed fraud ,and they will get you in contact with the attorney general in your state it might not be intentional fraud but it is still totally illegal SHAME ON THEMDealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??This is unbelievable! I cannot imagine why a dealer would do this. You should first contact the dealer and ask them why they did this. Dealers are meant to sell %26quot;genuine%26quot; used cars, i.e. they are supposed to check everything on your behalf - this is why you pay a premium to buy from a dealer.

Also you should speak to the DVLA and get their advice. Then you should probably contact watch dog (on their website) and tell them what happened.

Go to your local Citizens Advisory Bureau and get their advice. If you can, get a friend to call the dealer and find out what sort of checks they do on the cars they sell - on the pretense that your friend is interested in buying a car from them.Dealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??report this to the police this is fraud then sue for mony back.Dealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??Just tell the dealership that you believe there is a problem with the actual mileage versus what they sold it to her with. The lemon law still stands and a dealership better understand that law. My advise is if it is a large dealership, then ask them to make it right. Like a different car of greater or equal value, a personal apology from the owner, free oil changes for life, free washes, or you will get a lawyer. You could just get a lawyer to start, either way you have a great chance of getting more out of this.Dealer sold my mom a car w/ 14K miles but did background check to find really has 61+K on it! what 2 do??Get a lawyer

    1996 Dodge Stratus

I have a Dodge Stratus 1996 model that was working perfectly before and then suddenly one day driving on the highway, when we would give gas the car wouldn't accelerate so I pulled over to the side of the road and turn it off and then I started it back on and because this seemed to be a continuing problem I went to the dealer. He told me to do the tune up for the car and so I did. After that the mechanic went for a test drive and he said that he experienced the same problems I had. He told me that the Cam Shaft sensor and Crank Shaft sensor need to replaced and so I got them replaced. After this, more problems started to show up. SO then he told me I need the Catalytic converter changed as well and I also got that done. Now the car is still have the same issue but it's even more problematic then before. It starts and then after about 1000 to 2000 ft it stops and turns off. So this is a repeating problem right now and I don't know how to solve this problem. Can you please provide me with an answer to this issue because I have spent a well amount of money on the things the mechanic told me to get fixed and the issue has only gotten worst.1996 Dodge Stratus car problem, please read the detail and try to help thanks.?That is the problem with older cars, by the time people take them in for repair, there are multiple problems and one thing can lead to another. I still think either the Cam or Crank sensor is the problem, or perhaps the circuit going to these components is being compromised. I have no idea why a catalytic converter would be suggested as a cause of the problem you describe. The shop you had the car serviced at has an obligation to get the car running properly at this point, for no additional charge to you. You have spent enough money and they should fix the problem at their expense from this point on.

  • How do I gut a catalytic converter the RIGHT way so I don't screw anything up?

It's a 1995 Silverado with a 350. The 02 sensor is before the cat so I won't have any problems with check engine lights or anything because of it. The Y-Pipe is already out as the front pump seal and rear main seal had to be changed. How do I gut a catalytic converter the RIGHT way so I don't screw anything up?Never mind the other guy. %26quot;Sheesh!%26quot; People can be such goody two shoes sometimes. *shakes head*

It's very simple to do since you already have the y-pipe disconnected. Just take a large piece of pipe or a crowbar and insert it into the y-pipe to get it into the catalytic converter. You will hear it as you bust the ceramic pieces. Make sure you get them busted up pretty good before turning the unit upside down and emptying it.How do I gut a catalytic converter the RIGHT way so I don't screw anything up?Should we report you to the EPA and collect the finder's fee? Or would you like to just get the $10,000 fine yourself?

'Service engine soon' light on in a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix?

I gave it a tune up, replaced the EGR, changed the PVC, replaced the catalytic converter, changed the upstream oxygen sensor and checked all the fuses. Yet this stubborn light refuses to go off.

I've heard that it could be the gas cap; it passed the AIM check on that particular test. I've heard it could be the fuel injection, and I've given it fuel injector cleaner. The light has stayed on.

I've gotten the light reset. It comes back on. Same code everytime.

Does anybody know how to fix this?'Service engine soon' light on in a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix?2 things downstream o2 sensor also are you loosing antifreeze?? intake manifold gasket'Service engine soon' light on in a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix?on an obd2 system that code means that the pre and post cat o2 sensors are having a very similar voltage pattern. the computer sees the4 similar voltages as a sign that the cat it self is not doing its job. i do not see that a fuel injection problem could be causing this unless the4 computer is not altering the fuel mixture. in order for a cat to work it has to see a rich/lean/rich/lean/situation. this allows the catalyst to absorb and use O2, with out this it cannot work. 'Service engine soon' light on in a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix?Catalyst below threshold can mean a couple things. The ECU is reading the upstream and downstream O2 sensors and looking for a specific difference between the two. When it sees nearly the same readings on both sensors, The ECU throws out that code. This may be a bad cat, but it could also mean bad O2 sensor(s). Find a good Tech to actually diagnose this properly. It's obvious that you have thrown a bunch of money at this engine light, starting from scratch with a GOOD tech will be money well spent.'Service engine soon' light on in a 97 Pontiac Grand Prix?thought about calling the parts department of your local dealer and ask them what the code means? 94 bonneville has a loss of power and wont start sometimes?

Ok well i will describe the problems and maybe you can offer some help ... the first thing that occurred was a general loss of power and severe decrease in gas mileage. Also i noticed then it would idle roughly and when i only gave it a little throttle it would run roughly like it was sorta stalling. Well that was the beginning and since then the problem has worsened. I though maybe it was an exhaust issue, namely the catalytic converter so i bypassed it expecting the problem would improve but it has not .. Now sometimes it wont start at all. Once it has been from cold being turned off overnight and it would turn over but never fire, but mostly it occurs when the car has been running long enough to get to operating temp and i let it cool for more than ten minutes and try to start it again before 90 minutes or so. All i have to do when this happens is let it sit for an hour or two and when i return it will start right up. The one time it did it from cold that time was drastically reduced to only a half hour or less. The other thing that i notice is when i start it it runs poorly till it get slightly warm like i have to give it gas to keep it from dying, and also after an initial slight warm up it will idle ok till, from what i guess it the egr kicking open, ( i hear a click then suddenly it idles much rougher. I cleaned the injectors, bypassed the catalytic converter, changed all plugs and cables, replaced the fuel filer, and tried running higher octane fuels in case the injecters were the problem. Now im thinking it could be the fuel pump but i dont wanna just spend the outrageous amount to replace it ... like 199 for just the pump plus 30 for the stainer, without more info first. So any suggestions as to possible problems, possilbly how to test them and how to test the fuel pump without replacing it are all welcome help. Thank you in advance for your help.94 bonneville has a loss of power and wont start sometimes?I'd go after the cat converter. Try starting the car and get under it enough to look at the cat converter and if it starts getting red hot looking then theres your problem also look at the exhaust manifold(s) and see if that gets red hot. If its red hot like that then its the cat converter and it badly plugged up. A plugged up cat converter will cause the car to run very poorly to the point of stalling. Replace it at a modest cost of 300-900 bucks.

How often does your Catalytic Converter need to be replaced?

I have a 97 hyundai tiburon that has 144K miles on it. I purchased it off of some guy about 10K miles ago and i don't think he ever changed anything. Should i replace it because i heard that after a while it gets glogged and old. Is that true? How often does your Catalytic Converter need to be replaced?Hopefully you should never have to replace it unless it develops a problem. I certainly would not replace it on a preventive basis. How much is the catalytic converter for a 93 acura legend?

and how much does it coast to install it?

i have a Nitogen combustion in my car, so do u think i need to change the CC?the nitrogen is high. How much is the catalytic converter for a 93 acura legend?High Nox would be caused by a bad EGR system. But usually a new cat will clean it up enough to pass. You don't need to get a Honda/Acura cat, you can get a generic unit for about 60-100 dollars. Install is about $200.

  • How many catalytic converters does a 99 honda civic ex have?

I went to a mechanic and he said that the reason why my check engine light was on is because my catalytic converter wasnt working, and that because of this, i would not pass my smog emissions test. He then proceded to tell me that he tried to find a catalytic converter, but the only one he could find costs $800. He also said he would have to replace several gaskets due to changing the converter. When i got home, I googled catalytic converter 99 honda civic, and got quotes between $70 and $250. I'm trying to figure out why he told me that it would cost $800. Was he just over simplifying the fact that I need more than one converter replaced? OR is that unlikely? I usually like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but this is sketchy. How many catalytic converters does a 99 honda civic ex have?I would say your car has 1 converter. My 1993 Civic and 1999 Accord only have one each.

As for the parts, they are goofy for the Civics. I wanted an O2 sensor and told them them hook up connector. They said they had it in stock, only to find out it was not even close. There is atleast 4 different types of O2 sensors.

The Civic went over 350,000 miles and 16 years on the original catalytic converter the car drove off the lot with. The Accord has over 118,000 miles and the original converter. I would doubt your converter is bad. The O2 sensors are probably bad. Civics have either 1 sensor off the headers and some have one there and before the converter.

The web price is for the part, the mechanic added labor cost too.How many catalytic converters does a 99 honda civic ex have?there are primarily 2 kinds of catalytic converters. one for two wheelers and one for four wheelers. In each case no vehicle can be fitted with more than one catalytic converters. I must also add that catalytic converter is indeed used to reduce emissions. Your civic has only one catalytic converter and this must not cost you more than 100$ to purchase. This converter is easily retro-fitted hence changing gaskets is not required either. I think you need to change your mechanic first and then have the converter changed.

Does my Vauxhall Corsa Life 1.0L 2005 have a catalytic converter?

I have a hole in the middle section of my exhaust, so i want to replace the whole exhaust. Can anyone tell me if this car has a catalyic converter? I understand the exhaust will cost about 4 times as much if it does. Or can the rest of the exhaust be replaced without replacing the cat? Last question lol, how long should a catalytic convertor last until it needs changing? Cheers for your help.Does my Vauxhall Corsa Life 1.0L 2005 have a catalytic converter?answer to your question is probably yes mate, to be honest prices can vary alot depending on were the garage or itself get the part from.the actual cat should be located just under the manifold at the front.

(from memory)the actual exhaust goes from justt below the cat to the b/box so you can jus replace the middle piece.

there would be no point in replacing the cat just for the sake of it.

    does the cat rattle?

does the car run lumpy like it seames the cats blocked?

personal i would just replace the middle and b/box because the flange on the m/pip to the b/box is prone for corrosion.

hope this helps :)Does my Vauxhall Corsa Life 1.0L 2005 have a catalytic converter?First of all, a 2005 Corsa running on gasoline should have a catalytic converter; when you look at the exhaust system, it should be somewhere about where the gearshift lever is in the car. I drive a 1990 Vectra A, have replaced the exhaust system several times, but still have the original catalytic converter - 18 years now! So I figure you can easily replace the exhaust while leaving the converter in place. If you absolutely have to replace the cat, look at junkyards first ... GOOD LUCK!

I was just wondering how can I figure out if my catalytic converter is stopped up?

Does my bad catalytic converter burn oil?

99 Jetta. Just got the oil changed. already low. does my bad catalytic converter burn oil? Also, I live in Baltimore, Maryland. How much is a good price to get my catalytic converter replaced (parts %26amp; labor)?Does my bad catalytic converter burn oil?It is the other way around. The oil consumption of the engine made your catalytic converter go bad.

Your engine more than likely is the problem. Oil consumption usually comes from one or more areas in your engine.

You may have worn piston rings

You may have worn valve seals

    You may have both problems.

The excessive engine oil consumption was more than the catalytic converter could handle. Now the catalytic converter is fouled. It will eventually get plugged. When this happens there will be a noticeable drop in power. If you replace the catalytic converter it will quickly become fouled again from the oil coming from the engine.

Either way the only permanent fix is an engine overhaul. But it is up to you if you want to spend a few thousand dollars on a 10 year old car. The cost of an overhaul or replacement engine could easily exceed the value of this car.Does my bad catalytic converter burn oil?Mad Jack is exactly correct. The converter has no effect on the condition of the engine but oil passing through the exhaust will destroy a very expensive converter quickly. These things are not at all cheap, like about a grand for most of them. Fix your engine first.Does my bad catalytic converter burn oil?Hi

No a catalytic converter well or does not burn oil.. If you took you car to one of the oil/lube places .. they are know for not putting in enough oil and in some cases not putting oil back in at all.. I would add oil then see if it goes down again.. watch under your car for leaks from a lose oil filter or a lose drain nut.

I dough that the converter is bad.. I would have a second opinion from a muffler shop first.. they are not cheap the converter its self can cause anywhere up to $300.oo + labor.. I don't know for your application.

    good luck

Help with pricing of car part and installation?

Hey guys, I need some help. My catalytic converter needs changing, I plan on buying one online and pay for someone to install it. I got a price of $65 for an Eastern Universal cat converter for my 1998 Ford Escort ZX2. Is that a good price? How much would it cost for a mechanic to put that on for me?

Thanks guys.Help with pricing of car part and installation?be carefull that the cat you are purchasing is acceptable for the state you live in! Catalytic and alternator problem?

I recently changed my catalytic converter on my 00 honda civic Sedan.

it was making a crackling sound so i got a new one.

The next day i bought a high output alternator, (yesterday).

I installed it but did not do the big three.

First one of the wires connected to my radiator fan motor burned out and my car overheated.

when i got home I just jiggled the wires around that goes to my Radiator fan (It turns on by a switch that i have next to the steering wheel) and took the battery out. When i put the battery back in the fan worked

one connection looked burnt but the fan still works.

Now my car wont go fast and i think the sensor in my catalytic converter or the sensor that tells it how to open (or i dont know what it does i just know it tells the converter something and makes the car run) blew out.

I think the wire for my radiator fan burned because of my high output alternator.

I dont now how many amps my alternator is but i know its powerful.

Can my alternator be so powerful that it blows out all my fuses and my O2 sensor's?

also well also when i changed my got my catalytic converter my check engine light came on a few hours later.

and yesterday when my radiator failed, i didnt know it, and my engine started smoking

i let it cool down and drove home but the check engine light started blinking but my car was driving fine just a little slow.

i was going to work but when a started driving my car had no power to it. i think my converter is failing me but why would the sensor go out if i just got it installed 2 days agoCatalytic and alternator problem?the cat wouldn't be causing it but that alternator needs to go. Honda's are picky like that you change one thing and you gotta change a bunch of other stuff. put it back to stock and go.

make sure you put all the gaskets on that came with the converter so you dont have an exhaust leak but you cat (in a nutshell) simply cleans your exhaust kinda like a filter so it doesn't pollute the air. i think that alternator fried something serious that's electrical and its causing the ecu to throw a bunch of engine codes.Catalytic and alternator problem? You have multiple problems. Change your ignition wires and plugs. That will cure the blinking check engine light. You might have shorting feed wires to various parts. Change them and make sure you are not rubbing to the frame.

How many catalytic converters does a 2000 pontiac firebird v6 3.8L have?

My check engine light is on and I scanned the car and got code: P0420 catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1). I need to know how many converters I have because I know some cars have 2 of them. The weird thing is I'm not having any problems with my car. I changed the catalytic converter about 4-5 years ago and I'm not having any of the same problems that I had when it went before. One guy suggested it might be just a oxygen sensor, but another mechanic said that the oxygen sensor had nothing to do with that scan code. I'm trying to figure this out myself so I can save some money so if you can give me any help I would appreciate it. Thank You!How many catalytic converters does a 2000 pontiac firebird v6 3.8L have? You have one converter and 2 oxygen sensors. One infrot of the converter and one behind it. Emissions test failed, "main catalytic converter below threshold level." How to bypass THAT?

I failed my emissions test (in the state of NV, Clark County) and I was wondering if there are any ways around this. I mean the last time I got it checked, I was told that I'd have to pay $1,000 in labor and repairs. This time, I just called this guy whose number was listed on one of the DMV papers (one which I got after I failed the test) and he said it's gonna take 65 dollars for diagnostics and God only knows how much he'll ask for the parts, repair labor etc.

I guess my question is, I don't want to spend a thousand bucks (although it's probably not gonna be that much since only the main cat converter is below threshold level; the earlier guy asked me to have both cat converters changed), so is there a way around this?

My car is a Kia Sephia, made in 2000. (From what the earlier guy told me, it's supposed to have two cat converters; I still don't know if it does).Emissions test failed, %26quot;main catalytic converter below threshold level.%26quot; How to bypass THAT?NAPA on-line parts store has a direct fit converter for your car for $254 + shipping. So, if you really need a converter, the $1000 price quote is a major rip-off in my view based upon prices I've found. This item can't be installed in cars licensed in California (for what reason I have no idea).

Did the emissions test station tell you that you had a %26quot;Main Catalytic Converter%26quot; failure.

I've never seen a car with two converts unless it had dual exhausts. Look under your car to see if you have two exhaust pipes coming out the back of your car (one on the left side, one on the right side).

Another problem I have with your question. I have a 1993 pickup truck with over 180k miles. I had a 1983 Suburban with over 140k miles. Neither ever needed a converter. I don't think you have a catalytic converter problem. My Suburban had a vacuum leak that made it look like a converter problem.

There are two oxygen sensors (one before the converter, one after). The difference between the two outputs tells the computer how the converter is functioning. You may have a bad sensor. They'll replace it and tell you they replaced the converter. Now I can't rule out that a bad O2 sensor caused the converter to fail (it can happen). But you should have other codes to show that problem.

Find another mechanic for a second opinion. You can tell I have little trust in auto mechanics.Emissions test failed, %26quot;main catalytic converter below threshold level.%26quot; How to bypass THAT?You might try getting one from a junkyard. You could find one on line at a lower price, they have some rare metals in them which makes them expensive, and shop around for some one to install it. There is not much of any way of getting around the problem to make it look normal to the ECU.Emissions test failed, %26quot;main catalytic converter below threshold level.%26quot; How to bypass THAT?I never heard of a car with two cats, but I could be wrong. Just buy a new cat, and have a muffler shop weld it on, or if its a bolt on you can do it your self for the price of parts. But that two cat thing sounds sketchy.Emissions test failed, %26quot;main catalytic converter below threshold level.%26quot; How to bypass THAT?take it to kia dlr and get estimate//take it to meineke muffler shops and get estimate//dont be afraid to shop around ask kia if it has 2 cats//mazda rx models have 4 so lets get the facts//you can panic later its too early nowEmissions test failed, %26quot;main catalytic converter below threshold level.%26quot; How to bypass THAT?cats can fail but is rare and being a 2000 model may still be covered under warranty. sometimes other parts fail that make it look like a cat has gone i.e oxygen sensors. I just went through this on my buick were I was chasing a code for the cat for almost a year I replaced both Oxygen sensors twice and chased vacuum lines all over and it turned out to be a wrong gasket between the cat and exhaust manifold to small of a diameter not allowing enough air through $2 part lots of troubleshooting. take to a trusted garage and get several opinions.Emissions test failed, %26quot;main catalytic converter below threshold level.%26quot; How to bypass THAT?There are two possibilities. Either the cat really is below the operating threshold, and will have to be replaced, or the sensor that monitors that cat is not functioning correctly. A scanner check is the only way to find out. That usually cost you an hours labor at what ever the local rate is. The test will help you decide how to proceed. The code has to be cleared and a drive cycle completed before you can pass the emissions test.

How do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed?

How do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed? And what are the problems with a bad catalytic converter? How do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed? Two basic performance problems can occur with converters. One - it (they) get plugged due to something like overheating. The more plugged the converter is, the sooner you will notice the engine losing power. Yes, it could act just like it is a fuel starvation problem. This can be identified by a back pressure check of the exhaust system or removing the converter.

Two - it can stop converting due to damage to the honeycomb within the converter, such as a violent hit to the shell, or if the honeycomb gets coated with some material like motor oil. This can be confirmed by an emission check.

Either way, I would recommend maintaining a working catalytic converter. Fresh air and compliance is a good thing. It is a myth that converters (if properly working) reduce engine power. How do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed?your car will start to lose power ,and your

exhaust will start to smell like rotten eggs,or sulfurHow do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed?Depends on car age usually. Can fail SMOG test, or start to plug which will cause you to loose power, especially under load like acceleration as as mentioned before the smell can be a giveawayHow do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed?the easiest way is with an infared temp gun. COST 39.99 the inlet temp should be 100 degrees cooler then the outlet temp. the reason being is as exhaust coming thru the inlet side of the converter contains unburned fuel or hydrocarbons in it. the converter acts as an over to burn off the excess unburned fuel in the exhaust and as a result the temp leaving the converter will be about 100 degrees hotter. if your inlet and outlet temps are the same then the converter is not burning off the raw fuel not burned because of incomplete combustion which is normal in internal combustiable enginesHow do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed? You can hear the exhaust tip sounding like something is plugged up when you rev the motor. Also the cat just doesn't burn up, you have a fuel problem with motor, it is runnig rich, maybe cuz of the computer. How do I know if my catalytic converter needs to be changed? If it fails smog due to high hydrocarbons(un-burned fuel), high CO, and high Nox. On OBD2 cars, if the O2 sensors before and after the cat are send the same signal to the ECU the CAT is bad. Not alot of people know this but if your car is out of warranty less then 5 years old and under 80k miles you can take it to the dealership and they will replaces any emissons equipment on the car for free. But if you are wrong about the part being bad you have to pay them for looking at it.

Thankyou for your help.Changing a Catalytic Converter on an Audi A3 1.8T 1999?How many miles on it??? I seriously question whether or not you need a new cat. I would try everything else, first. Locate and clean your throttle body and idle air control valve. Use Gum-out spray down the throttle body with engine running to %26quot;flush%26quot; out debris in your converter and exhaust system. Check your PCV hose for leaks or collapsed hose(s). Change your spark plugs. I hope you are using only oil that meets VW spec 402, like ELF or Mobil One. Good Luck!!

The way they check your cat is they cut it off and look inside to see if it's clogged, but they cannot be welded back on (it would not seal). So, even if you do not need one, you're buying one once they 'check' it for you. They told us that ours was bad because you could see light through it ( you're supposed to see light). Then when we asked for our part back, they gave us 'another' converter, not ours. My husband new it was not ours because before taking it to midas, he had been down there looking under the car. 'Ours' had a black mark on it ... and was bigger. So, anyway, ... DON'T GO TO MIDAS!! Check out rip-off.com

How easy is it to change a catalytic converter on a peugeot 306?

they are quite easy really two 10ml headed bolts join front pipe with springs and washers and exhuast clamp at other end probably 13ml heads this will not damage any of exhuast if done correctly make sure that no exhaust putty or gum is used before the cat as this will damage itHow easy is it to change a catalytic converter on a peugeot 306?Dead easy.

Take it to Kwick Fit, go to the pub for an hour and it's done.

Couldn't be simpler. How easy is it to change a catalytic converter on a peugeot 306?changing the kat will damage the rest of the exhaust if more than six months old so better just replace the full exhaust the kat will unbolt and the rest will cut and are placed on hangers so it is quite easy fit all the pieces on the floor loosely compare to old system then start at one end work to the other hen you are happy with it bolt it up tight dont forget that a used kat is worth 20-40 scrap value as it will contain 2 grams of platnium

What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?

I took my car in the shop and they told me that my car needs the catalytic converter changed. What is that? I have a honda accord 03 they are charging me to fix it $500. Is that right. How much is that piece in the auto parts if I go get it?What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?03 Honda Accord part #18160RAAA11

    Dealers list price $633.98

They offered you aftermarket part, so $500 with labor sounds OK.What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?It is part of the exhaust system and the cost should include the disposal of the old one as well as the price of the replacement. What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?a catalytic converter is so expensive because it is made with Platinum.

They should cost about $150 retail. it is on your exhaust and it burns up excess fuel coming out of your engine to reduce emmission.

Shop around, $500 is too muchWhat is a Catalytic Converter from a car?yeah i would say that 500$ is too much to buy you can sell a catalytic converter from a car that is old and doesn't work for around 75$ to a scrap yard so they are a little pricey considering the Platinum and copper used in it.What is a Catalytic Converter from a car?the catalytic converter is a small box in the exhaust just after the engine. what it does is take nasties in the exhaust gas like carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides etc and convert them into gasses such as carbon dioxide (CO2), and water (H2O).

they are very expensive because most of them contain precious metals such as platinum in them.

they DO NOT burn up excess fuel. they are actually damaged by excess fuel, and as a result cat converters are often damaged by rich running engines. What is a Catalytic Converter from a car? There is no way that you would need you catalytic converter changed on a 03 car. Espcially a honda. Seems to me the shop is trying to rip you off. Like other have said its in your exhaust system. Look under your car follow the exhaust off the manafold to and you will see a small thing that resembles a muffler. after the catalytic converter you will find the actual muffler which will be larger... then the end of the exhasut pipe. (I CANT STRESS THIS ENOUGH GET A SECOND OPINION) I would be hard pressed to think you need a new catalytic converter.... Why did you have the car in the shop to begin with??? (The cost isnt in the converter itself... legally it needs to welded into place because they are not to be removed...your cost is in the labor.)

  • How do i change my catalytic converter?

i have a 1994 saturn and i need to change the catalytic converter, and im not sure how i go about doing this. i don't know where to cut it off, i don't want to cut it to short. if anyone has some ideas where and how to do it. thank youHow do i change my catalytic converter? There are two types, universal, and direct fit. It appears that both require cutting is seems. But the direct fit only requires cutting on one end. The first thing is to get the new one and mark where the cuts will be, then make the cut. A tube cutter works best, but there are other ways.

Many states require the exhaust system to be welded. In others clamps and splice tubes can be used. For those states a piece of exhaust pipe that telescopes over the existing tubing can be used along with clamps to seal the exhaust back up. This allows for fixing a fit up that is too large. Summit racing sells special band clamps that work for this too. But the site is malfunctioning at this time.

For the cost of the tools needed, a local (non-chain) exhaust shop can weld one in for you.How do i change my catalytic converter?First.. Repair what ever damaged it.

Simply putting on a new catalytic converter will only solve the affect, not the cause.

Two weeks from now, you're going to be replacing it again if you didn't fix the cause of the problem to begin with.

Unless you have a plasma cutter, and wire feed welder, pay someone to do it.

How much does a shop charge to change a catalytic converter?

what ever the catalytic converter costs, and you can find that out from an auto zone and negotiate that part of the deal with the mechanic. If the mechanic says $200 to buy the converter and you know it only costs $100 for example, then you can negotiate down $100. You can also do the same for labor, get two opinions. Sometimes a mechanic knows its impossible to do something for the quote they gave you, but you also should have some idea of what this job will cost, like it shouldn't be over a man hour to complete, which means the who job might not be much over $200. good luck. How much does a shop charge to change a catalytic converter?$100 plus parts is what I paidHow much does a shop charge to change a catalytic converter?I paid $200 part and labor (for a 1997 dodge RAM)5.9L v8How much does a shop charge to change a catalytic converter? What kind of car, a chevy chevette or a mercedes. How big of a difference will there be if I change my catalytic converter to a test pipe?

I have high performance catback and headers installed but I have the stock catalytic converter connecting them, it sounds really good right now but will there be any performance gains, like how much horsepower would be gained from a test pipe and also will it change the sound because I love the sound, it is really deep and not too loud. How big of a difference will there be if I change my catalytic converter to a test pipe? There would be a modest gain (maybe one horse). Most modern catalytic converters are pretty free flowing. They are required by law and to remove one is a irresponsible act.

Now if you want better performance, just get some better headers and maybe a mega-flow catalytic. That is what I did.How big of a difference will there be if I change my catalytic converter to a test pipe? The main thing you will notice is that no reputable shop will do it, and if you can find a shop that will, you will probably need to tow it there on a trailer, pay cash and trailer it away. You then can expect to never have any reputable shop anywhere ever work on it again until you put a cat on. If you take it to the right shop, they will call the EPA, and they will give you a $2,500 fine for removing it, and give the shop that did it a $10,000 fine.

But in a hypothetical situation, you will lose HP and torque by removing it. Modern engines need a certain amount of back pressure to ensure proper scavenging. This back pressure is created by the cat, and most modern cats produce very little back pressure. If you have no cat, your vehicle will blow unburnt fuel out your exhaust, will burn exhaust valves, and smell like @$$ to any poor soul behind you. Very uncool in my book......
